Math Homework for Tonight!
Check out the following word problems. Reply to this post in the comment section. Your comment should answer the following questions: What word problems seemed to most real (you could actually see the problem happening in your own life)? What word problems seemed the most challenging? Why were they challenging? Why are word problems important to practice?
1. Sy and Sy had half a cake. How much of the cake is left? (By Sy)
2. There were six pies. Each pie had four pieces. Eight people want two pieces. How many pieces are left? Make your answer an improper fraction. (By Izzy, Tyler, and Jamie)
3. Ilana, Katy and Sarah had a pie. There was a full pie. Ilana and Sarah shared a piece of the pie. They had 1/4 of the pie. Katy had 1/4 of the pie. How much of that pie is left? (By Ilana)
4. If Joe has 2/3 of a pizza, and Oik eats one whole pizza, how much pizza was eaten? (By Tristan, Ari, and Elliott)
5. Ploto and Ilana want pie. They 8/8 of the pie. How much pie do they each get? (By Michaela and Madi)

8. If 15 people at the mall are surveyed about their favorite colors. Here are the results: 5 people liked green, 10 people liked purple, and no one liked blue. What fraction of the people liked purple? Simplify your answer. (By Jamie, Izzy, and Tyler)
9. Pluto made 3/4 of a pie. Nico made 1/2 of a pie. How much do they have together? Simplify your answer by making it a mixed number. (By No Name)

Today in Math
Hi everyone! Today in math we are going to work hands on with fractions. We are going to split up into groups of 3 and work at 5 different stations around the room. We should have time for every group to go to each station.
One station will be at the computers in the room. You will be visiting this site. This is a great way to SEE mixed numbers and improper fractions.
Another station will be working with fraction manipulatives at the U table.
A third station will be at the SMARTBoard playing this really fun game called Cookies for Grampy. You create one whole cookie by adding fractions with unlike denominators.
The fourth station is working on creating real life fraction word problems. The group will come up with some hum dingers and we will post these on the blog.
The final station is a work station with me-- we will be working out problems that we could see on our quiz tomorrow!
