Awesome Guest Speaker

Today we had an awesome guest speaker, Laila Wierzba, a Holocaust survivor whose story is quite similar to the story we are reading in class, Number the Stars. Laila was only 3 months old when her family left Denmark and escaped to Sweden during the 1943 raid on Copenhagen during the Nazi occupation.  She told an amazing story, and we learned a lot!

Happy Tuesday!

Current Event #6 -

Friday, May 6, 2011

Happy Friday!

We had a great day today-- we introduced the new novel we will be using for literature circles, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry by reading and talking about King Christian X of Denmark.

We also reviewed the calendar for the next couple of weeks.  We will have a vocab test on Unit 11 on Wednesday, and our SS test and math test (for Mrs. Rivner's math class) will be on Thursday.  The current event is due next Friday.

On Tuesday, we will have our Yom Ha'atzmaout program, and the students are to wear their white Davis tops and either jeans OR their navy bottoms.

Have a wonderful weekend!  There is no formal homework but students may spend their weekend working on studying for vocab Unit 11, their Chapter 8 SS test, or writing their song for their SS lesson.

Pictures from Friday and Reminders for Wahsega!

Reminders for our all-day trip on Monday, May 2nd!
We are very excited about our trip on Monday to Wahsega 4-H Center, an environmental education facility in Dahlonega, Georgia.

Remember that check in is at 6:45 and we will be departing Davis at 7am!
We plan on returning to Davis by 7pm.
Please be sure to send your child with a sack lunch, as lunch WILL NOT be provided!
They all need to bring a water bottle as well!

Activities for the Day

Our students will experience three classes at Wahsega:
·         HERPETOLOGY
·         STREAM ECOLOGY
·         PIONEER LIFE

The stream ecology class allows the children to get really close to nature-- the kids get to wade in a freshwater stream and explore the life in a stream.  However, since they will be wading, they will be getting wet!  If your child owns a pair of sandals with a back strap (like Tevas, Chocos, or Keens) that you don't mind them wearing in the water, please have them wear these on Monday.  If your child does not have a pair of those sandals, please make sure you send them with an extra pair of tennis shoes and socks because they will be very uncomfortable if they have to walk around in squishy shoes all day!
Prohibited Items

Students may not bring cell phones or any other electronic devices on this trip.  Any prohibited items brought will be confiscated, and additional consequences will be imposed upon the student’s return to school.

Money and Valuables

Students should not bring any money or anything of great value.

Uniform

  • Students must wear their teal Davis Academy uniform shirts and navy uniform bottom or blue jeans.
  • We will be doing quite a bit of walking, so please make sure your child wears good walking shoes.
  • Students are encouraged to dress appropriately as this trip will occur rain or shine, and we will be outside if it is raining.

Here are some pictures from today's really cool presentation "Mystery Reader's Theater" by Laughing Matters and Young Audiences.  It turns out our class picked wrong!  It was really "Philosopher", played by Jacob-- not "Francis", played by Jack!

Math Homework for 3/17

Hi everyone!  For your math homework tonight, you must visit the "Math Is Fun" website and READ the whole page.  At the bottom, there is a link to four question (it is a green box that says: Your Turn).  Do each of those four questions.
Also, visit this game.  You get to turn fractions into decimals.

To get full credit for your homework, please comment to this post.  In this comment ask one question that you still have about decimals.

Please make sure you choose "Name/URL" from the dropdown menu.  If you do not, you will probably not be able to post.  Don't forget that your comment will not show up automatically.  I have to approve all comments before they get posted online.

Good luck!

Dear people of the internet,

We have been working on our young authors night books. This year we have to write a biography about a president. We randomly selected three presidents and chose one of them. For the last few weeks we have been researching our presidents, and we have been writing our rough draft. We just started typing our final drafts. We have to know everything about them from their elementary school to the date they died. Our young authors night is May 4, 2011. Be sure to come and read them then!

Sincerely,

Mrs.Rivners 4th grade class (By Elliott)

Extra credit in math!

For extra credit order these fractions from greatest to least. Post it here by Friday.

            1.    1/2, 4/6, 2/12     2.    4/8, 2/4, 1/2             3.    6/12, 2/4, 2/3             4. 4/8, 2/5, 2/12.

What we are doing this week

Dear readers,

This week we are doing a lot of exiting things. On Monday we talked about appropriate costumes for the Purim carnival which will be next Monday. We discussed that the Purim costume you wear must relate to Purim in a way. For example you could be Superman because Mordechi is the hero of Purim. This week we also are typing our presidents young authors book which is due on 3/21/11. Today we looked at a Lewis Carroll poem and tried to translate it in our own word which is very challenging. In art we are making clay jars that are supposed to tell about ourselves. We have our current events due on 3/17/11.So that's what is happening in class this week.

Math Homework for Tonight!

Check out the following word problems.  Reply to this post in the comment section.  Your comment should answer the following questions:  What word problems seemed to most real (you could actually see the problem happening in your own life)?  What word problems seemed the most challenging?  Why were they challenging?  Why are word problems important to practice?

1.  Sy and Sy had half a cake.  How much of the cake is left? (By Sy)

2.  There were six pies.  Each pie had four pieces.  Eight people want two pieces.  How many pieces are left?  Make your answer an improper fraction. (By Izzy, Tyler, and Jamie)

3.  Ilana, Katy and Sarah had a pie.  There was a full pie.  Ilana and Sarah shared a piece of the pie.  They had 1/4 of the pie.  Katy had 1/4 of the pie.  How much of that pie is left? (By Ilana)

4.  If Joe has 2/3 of a pizza, and Oik eats one whole pizza, how much pizza was eaten? (By Tristan, Ari, and Elliott)

5.  Ploto and Ilana want pie.  They 8/8 of the pie.  How much pie do they each get? (By Michaela and Madi)

6.  Pluto and Dog the Cat wanted a brownie so they made one.  They were going to split it in half, but then Cat the Dog came over and wanted part of the brownie too.  How did they divide it equally? (By Jason, Mason, and Charlotte)

7.  If Adam eats 1/3 of an apple, and Roy eats 6/7 of an apple.  How much did they eat in all? (By Elliott, Tristan, and Ari)

8.  If 15 people at the mall are surveyed about their favorite colors.  Here are the results:  5 people liked green, 10 people liked purple, and no one liked blue.  What fraction of the people liked purple?  Simplify your answer.  (By Jamie, Izzy, and Tyler)

9.  Pluto made 3/4 of a pie.  Nico made 1/2 of a pie.  How much do they have together?  Simplify your answer by making it a mixed number.  (By No Name)

Today in Math

Hi everyone!  Today in math we are going to work hands on with fractions.  We are going to split up into groups of 3 and work at 5 different stations around the room.  We should have time for every group to go to each station.

One station will be at the computers in the room.  You will be visiting this site.  This is a great way to SEE mixed numbers and improper fractions.

Another station will be working with fraction manipulatives at the U table.

A third station will be at the SMARTBoard playing this really fun game called Cookies for Grampy.  You create one whole cookie by adding fractions with unlike denominators.

The fourth station is working on creating real life fraction word problems.  The group will come up with some hum dingers and we will post these on the blog.

The final station is a work station with me-- we will be working out problems that we could see on our quiz tomorrow!

Evan Lysacek-- Solid Gold!

Evan Lysacek came and visited our school today!  He talked about winning his gold medal in the Olympics, and he spoke the power of telling others your dream.  (He also told us his favorite flavor of coke-- Coke Zero.)  What a treat!

I also uploaded the SS Study Guide for Chapter 5.  The test is March 11.

It's Snow Lie! It's SNOWING in the South!

I hope you are all enjoying the snow!  As fun as the snow has been, however, I can't wait to get back to school!  Send me your snow pictures, and I will add them to the blog so we can all see the fun you have been having in this winter wonderland!

We will (if the weather permits) have the spelling test on Friday (the twelve months of the year and the twelve ie and ei words).

Bring in your current events report when we come back to school, and instead of the grade counting for this grading period, we will have it count for next grading period (3rd quarter).
